Course Description

Implant success over a lifetime requires more than osseointegration. Craniofacial growth and remodeling continue throughout adult life. Natural teeth continue to erupt and migrate with the surrounding alveolar bone, while osseointegrated implants, like ankylosed teeth, remain fixed in position. Over time, this discrepancy can result in infraocclusion, open contacts and esthetic compromise. Dr. Daftary presents the restorative evidence, drawn from long-term clinical cases and research inside and outside dentistry. Dr. Zadeh addresses the surgical requirements for long-term bone and soft-tissue stability. The evidence calls for a new approach to implant treatment, and the presenters outline the clinical and design strategies that address it.

Lifelong Craniofacial Remodeling and Its Implications for Dental Implant Design

Educational Objective

  • Craniofacial growth and remodeling in adults
  • Tooth eruption and migration vs. the fixed position of implants
  • Facial form and its effect on implant position over time
  • Long-term complications: infraocclusion, open contacts, esthetic compromise
  • Buccal bone and soft-tissue requirements in the anterior maxilla
  • Risk assessment: patient and site characteristics
  • Clinical and design strategies to preserve buccal and lingual bone
